66Charles, I am not the expert, but I read on Cnet article ‘how to record streaming audio’ by jasmine france in the comments, Method ONE: buy a 6.5mm Y splitter and a short male to male jack and rerout speakers OUT to the Line-In (at the back of the PC). Dell and a few other companies disabled Stereo mix out to stop piracy. Method TWO: Get updated sound drivers to replace OEM crippled ones. THREE: Check software program for your audio, to make sure stereo or ‘wave mix’ is enabled.

I finally figured something out. Lots of Windows 7 people, like me, have trouble with their sound boards, so I gave up on it. Instead, I got an auxiliary chord (something you would use to hook up your mp3 player to your car stereo) and plugged one end into the headphone jack, and the other end into the microphone jack, on the same computer. I made sure that the microphone was enabled, and I just pressed record on audacity. It worked like a charm.

I’m using the mac version of audacity. I know you are using a Pc . My problem is that when I record audio from my web cam , or any sound from the desktop I have this reverb and or feedback. Could you tell me how to eliminate this before i record or point me to a place that can tell me how to fix it. The feed back is like you get when the microphone is close to something like a speaker of course. My microphone is built in. I’ve tried messing around with the volume levels and the gain. Thanks

I’m using windows 7 and I am almost completley lost about this, I figured out how to switch the device to “stereo mix” and I disabled my microphone but I have no idea what to do with all of the other options. I’m using the beta version for windows 7 (wont let me use anything else) . I need to know every option I have to have selected / deselected

This is how to get the stereo mix button unshaded! Please like this comment so everybody sees, and when it gets taken down within a few months copy n paste it to make it noticeable for everybody!
1 – Click the little microphone on the bottom right of your screen
2 – Go to the top left and click “Options”
3 – Click “Properties”
4 – Look for your sound driver’s named and make sure its on input under “Mixer Device”
5 – Check “Stereo Mix” in the box
6 – Click “Ok” make sure mix is not on mute

To get the Stereo Mix:
Right click on the speakers icon in the Taskbar,select recording devices.There you should see your microphone and a Line in input.Right click on the field and select the “Show disabled devices” option if not already selected.Then the Stereo Mix will pop up.Enable it and set it as the default recording device.Finally disable the microphone so as not to get unneeded sound disturbances and start recording.Basically what you hear is what you get this way.That’s about it.
