Tutti gli appassionati di giochi su iPhone si saranno accorti dal "passo falso" fatto da Electronic Arts con il rilascio di Battlefield 3: Aftershock su App Store. Nessuno, o quasi, però, si aspettava che, addirittura, EA rimuovesse il titolo dallo store.

L'EA ha rilasciato alcune dichiarazioni a riguardo tramite un portavoce:

Battlefield 3: Aftershock, per chi non lo sapesse, "era" uno shoot’em-up orientato al multiplayer, con tantissime lacune, ad iniziare dall’armamentario davvero scarno. Insomma, sicuramente un titolo non all’altezza del brand e della concorrenza.

Intel 313 Series SSDs (also known as "Hawley Creek") were originally scheduled for Q4'11 release but obviously they were delayed. VR-Zone is now claiming that the release will take place alongside the Ivy Bridge processors and the 7-series chipsets. That could mean an April release, though there are also rumors of a delayed IVB launch. Either way, here's a quick rundown of the upcoming 313 SSDs.

The 313 Series is the successor of the 311 Series (or Larson Creek if you prefer codenames), which is a 20GB SLC NAND SSD meant for caching with Intel's Z68 chipset with Smart Response Technology (SRT). SRT will be even more useful with the Ivy Bridge platform because there will be widespread support among the 7-series chipsets: two of the three consumer desktop chipsets (Z77 and H77) will feature SRT, along with one of the business chipsets (Q77). We will also finally see mobile chipsets with support for SRT.

The major change with the 313 Series is that it will switch to 25nm SLC NAND and offer a 24GB model, but otherwise we are looking at a product very similar to 311 Series. The controller is Intel's own, but that's all we know for certain. Most likely the controller is the same as in 310, 311, and 320 Series, i.e. Intel PC29AS21BA0, because Intel's roadmap shows no plans for any other SATA 3Gb/s SSDs. It wouldn't make much sense to make a new SATA 3Gb/s controller just for one product, or to create a new SATA 3Gb/s controller in general at this point. Unfortunately we don't have any performance figures but given that the controller should be the same, the performance should be on par with 311 Series—the 24GB model should have slightly higher write speeds as it uses six NAND channels while the 20GB model uses only five.

As for pricing, VR-Zone is claiming a suggested retail price of $ 99 (20GB) and $ 119 (24GB). For comparison 20GB 311 Series had an MRSP of $ 110 and retails for ~$ 120 now, so a ~$ 10 price drop sounds plausible. A few German retailers have already listed the 24GB model and it's selling for around €104 without tax, which translates to ~$ 138, but Euro prices tend to run higher than USD. Moreover, one of the sellers is listing availability as 2-3 weeks so 313 Series may hit the retail channel sooner than April. However, some of the retailers are listing the SSDs as OEM models, which explains the early availability and possibly high pricing as well.

The Corsair Vengeance M60 and M90 Gaming Mice

Here's a prickly subject if ever there were one: while with keyboards you could reasonably argue for the superiority of using mechanical switches over traditional rubber-dome membrane keys, mice are much, much more a matter of preference. A mouse could have all the features you're looking for, but if the grip isn't right or the texture makes you hand clammy the whole enterprise can be a bust. Understanding how delicate the balancing act of a good mouse can be, Corsair has come up with matching mice for their new gaming keyboards.

The new Vengeance M60 is geared for FPS players with an innovative "Sniper" button while the M90 targets MMO players who'll use as many configurable buttons as they can find. In terms of styling and intended use, the M60 theoretically should be paired with the K60 keyboard while the M90 goes with the K90, though you can obviously mix and match as you see fit. The real question is how well they actually work in practice.

While Corsair's Vengeance keyboards had a pretty obvious progression, with the K90 being almost directly superior to the K60, the mice are definitely different creatures, sporting very different features and different grips. The only commonality between the two lies in the sensors (both use lasers rated for up to 5700dpi) and the ability to adjust sensitivity between three settings on the fly using Corsair's Dashboard software.

They also come with different price tags, though the difference isn't as great as the keyboards: the FPS-oriented M60 runs $ 59, while the MMO-oriented M90 clocks up at $ 69. These are fairly high prices but still essentially comparable to similar products from other vendors (and actually substantially cheaper than a lot of Razer's offerings).

The Vengeance M60 sports the standard mouse button configuration (left and right, middle mouse on the mouse wheel) along with back and forward buttons on the left side. Corsair's innovation here is the "Sniper" button, the big red button on the left side that, while held, drastically reduces the mouse's sensitivity to allow for more precise aiming. Below the mouse wheel is the mouse sensitivity indicator along with the sensitivity adjustment buttons, but it bears mentioning that all of these buttons can be reconfigured in Corsair's software. The underside of the M60 also features something the M90 lacks: three removable weights.

For the Vengeance M90, Corsair ditches the open-bodied grip and substantially changes the left side of the mouse. The sensitivity buttons are relocated to the top left next to the left mouse button, and then the thumb grip region includes a staggering nine configurable buttons. This is very different from the Razer Naga, which has twelve buttons arranged in a three-by-four grid; Corsair has essentially designed the M90 to have a button within range no matter where you click.

Like the M60, all of the M90′s mouse buttons are configurable, and you can even configure a button with the M60′s "Sniper" function. With the M90 you also gain a toggled backlit logo under the palm, but you lose the adjustable weight.

Finally, both mice come with braided cables, and neither comes with a software disc: you'll have to download Corsair's Dashboard from their website. It's probably just as well; I can't remember the last time I actually needed a driver disc and didn't just download the most recent drivers.

Juniper Research predicts big things

The report identifies three different contributing categories to this billion dollar opportunity for MEMS devices. There are the usual accelerometers, magnetometers and gyroscopes which will do pretty well anyway.  Then there are those being shoved into displays, RF devices, pressure sensors and microphones and finally there are future ideas such as  joysticks, temperature and humidity sensors, speakers and pico-projectors.

The report finds that inertial sensor use including accelerometers, gyroscopes and magnetometers, has mainly depended on advanced availability and capability of gaming and navigation applications.  This means they will be on all mobile devices, particularly in smartphones and tablets. This along with the continuous growth of mobile device shipments is driving MEMS sensors forward.

Report author Nitin Bhas said that MEMS sensors are expected to become an important differentiator for mobile device manufacturers towards enabling different capabilities.

Nei giorni scorsi avevamo parlato di ACTA ("Anti-Counterfeiting Trade Agreement"), un accordo commerciale plurilaterale che ha come obiettivo la protezione della proprietà intellettuale in tutte le sue forme. Nonostante l'Unione Europea avesse presentato ACTA come una risoluzione "indolore" (ved. questo nostro articolo), un coro di voci contrarie all'accordo si era levato da numerose parti.
L'ultima notizia è che la Commissione Europea ha chiesto alla Corte di Giustizia UE di analizzare i termini dell'accordo ACTA in modo tale da verificarne la compatibilità con i diritti fondamentali del cittadino.
Ad informare l'opinione pubblica è stata Viviane Reding, vice presidente della Commissione nonché commissario europeo per la giustizia, i diritti fondamentali e la cittadinanza, attraverso un post apparso su Twitter. Secondo la Reding spetta alla Corte di Giustizia dare un orientamento e fissare dei paletti ben segnalando quali sono i limiti che debbono essere rispettati.

Nella nota ufficiale che è stata da poco diramata, si legge che l'Europa non potrà mai rinnegare quei principi di libertà d'espressione e di libera circolazione delle informazioni considerati diritti fondamentali. "Anche la proprietà intellettuale", si scrive, "è un diritto fondamentale. (…) Comunque non si tratta di un diritto fondamentale "assoluto". La politica scelta in Europa deve saper bilanciare il rispetto di entrambi i diritti senza mettere in dubbio la loro essenza. (…) La protezione del diritto d'autore non può mai essere assunta a giustificazione per la restrizione della libertà e dell'espressione dell'informazione". La Reding evidenzia in neretto una frase: "per me, il blocco della rete Internet non è mai un'opzione sul tavolo" ed auspica un approccio nuovo al problema che permetta ai detentori dei diritti di trarre vantaggio del mezzo tecnologico per diffondere i propri lavori e trarre profitto. In tal senso, il comissario europeo insiste sulla necessità di promuovere convintamente un'offerta di contenuti legali attraverso il web.

Per quanto riguarda ACTA, la Reding osserva che sebbene l'accordo non introduca nuove disposizioni normative che alterino l'attuale quadro vigente sul territorio europeo, ben comprende i timori manifestati dall'opinione pubblica e per questo la Corte di Giustizia dirimerà eventuali nodi dando un parere super partes.

Il commissario conclude spiegando che normative come quella dei "tre schiaffi" (approvata ad esempio in Francia) non entreranno mai a far parte della legislazione europea. "Simili provvedimenti possono portare al taglio della connessione Internet per il cittadino senza che a questi sia concessa una procedura equa ed imparziale, sottoposta all'esame di un giudice", scrive la Reding che dichiara apertamente la sua avversione a normative di tal genere.

Altro che guerra fredda!

Nicola Sapone, uno dei condannati nell'ambito dell'inchiesta sulle Bestie di Satana

Una corda intorno al collo, come era successo al figlio 12 anni fa. Si è tolta la vita così, nella sua casa di Cassano Magnago (Varese), Flaviana Cassetta, la madre di Doriano Molla, il ragazzo trovato morto nel 2000 in un bosco a Cavaria con Premezzo, impiccato a un albero. Un episodio su cui si addensarono i sospetti della signora Cassetta, convinta che nella morte del figlio fossero coinvolti i membri delle Bestie di Satana. I dubbi della donna, però, nell'ottobre scorso non sono stati gli stessi del gip di Busto Arsizio, che ha archiviato il caso come suicidio. Dopo la morte del figlio, a 26 anni, Flaviana Cassetta aveva lanciato diversi appelli, chiedendo che si facesse chiarezza sulle circostanze del decesso, convinta che il giovane fosse stato ucciso o indotto al suicidio dai membri della setta, poi condannati per altri delitti.

A prescindere dal coinvolgimento delle Bestie di Satana nella morte di Doriano Molla, continua ad allungarsi ancora la lista di sangue legata alla setta, protagonista di una delle più angoscianti pagine di cronaca nera degli ultimi 20 anni. Le Bestie erano un gruppo di giovani della provincia di Varese, ritenuti responsabili di vari delitti, eseguiti con ferocia e violenza, tra simboli esoterici, pentacoli, croci rovesciate e rappresentazioni del numero della bestia nell'Apocalisse, il 666. Alla setta vennero addebitati tre omicidi (quelli di Chiara Marino, Fabio Tollis e Mariangela Pezzotta) e un'induzione al suicidio (Andrea Bontade). Per quei crimini, commessi tra il 1998 e il 2004, sono stati condannati Nicola Sapone e Andrea Volpe. Ma è sempre rimasto il dubbio che sia gli omicidi che le istigazioni al suicidio fossero molti di più. Di questo Flaviana Cassetta ne era sicura: suo figlio non si era tolto la vita, era stato ucciso o spinto a uccidersi dalle Bestie.

Doriano, appassionato di musica metal, era scomparso da casa il giorno della vigilia di Natale, nel 2000. Pochi giorni dopo il suo cadavere era stato ritrovato nella Valle del Boia, un bosco alla periferia di Cavaria, ai piedi di un albero, con un filo elettrico stretto attorno al collo. All'inizio del 2004, con il ritrovamento del cadavere di Mariangela Pezzotta sepolto nel giardino di una baita a Golasecca (Varese), vennero alla luce i delitti del gruppo dedito a rituali satanici e a un consumo smodato di droga e alcolici. Da allora Flaviana Cassetta aveva iniziato a sostenere che il figlio fosse entrato in contatto con alcuni membri della setta. Le indagini coordinate dalla Procura di Busto Arsizio sono proseguite anche in seguito alle rivelazioni dal carcere di Mario Maccione, il medium delle Bestie di Satana, che aveva parlato di altri delitti riconducibili alla setta, fra cui quello di Molla. L'inchiesta però ha escluso il coinvolgimento nella morte del giovane della setta satanica.

A trovare il cadavere di Flaviana Cassetta, appeso a una finestra del bagno all'interno della sua abitazione in via Roma, è stato il convivente, che subito ha chiamato il personale del 118 e i carabinieri. Dagli accertamenti non sono emersi segni di violenza sul corpo. E la donna non avrebbe lasciato alcun messaggio per spiegare i motivi del gesto. Un altro mistero, un'altra morte. Indirettamente le Bestie di Satana forse hanno colpito ancora.

"Sono tempi duri, il paese è indebitato, tutti vivono a credito… Ad un certo punto, arriva un turista tedesco. Ferma la macchina davanti all'unico albergo ed entra. Posa 100 euro sul bancone della reception e chiede di vedere le camere per sceglierne una. Il proprietario gli dice di scegliere quella che più gli aggrada. Appena il turista è sparito sù per le scale, l'albergatore prende i 100 euro, corre dal macellaio e paga il debito che aveva con lui. Il macellaio va immediatamente presso l'allevatore di maiali al quale deve 100euro e regola il suo debito. L'allevatore, a sua volta, corre a pagare la sua fattura presso la cooperativa agricola che gli procura gli alimenti per gli animali. Il direttore della cooperativa si precipita al pub per saldare il suo conto. Il barman, dà il biglietto alla prostituta che gli fornisce i suoi servizi a credito da un bel po'. La ragazza, che usa a credito le camere dell'albergo con i suoi clienti, corre a regolare i conti con l'albergatore. L'albergatore posa il biglietto sul bancone della reception dove il turista lo aveva posato. Dopo un po', il turista scende le scale e annuncia che non ha trovato una camera di suo gusto, per cui riprende il suo biglietto da 100 euroe se ne va… Nessuno ha prodotto nulla, nessuno ha guadagnato nulla, ma nessuno più è in debito e il futuro sembra molto più promettente… E' in questo modo, Signore e Signori, che funzionano i piani di salvataggio a beneficio dei Paesi dell'Europa in difficoltà!".
